Minister Rabbitte visits Clare centres and organisations
The Minister of State with responsibility for Disability, Anne Rabbitte TD, has visited a number of centres and organisations in Clare that provide services for people with disabilities.
Minister Rabbitte was in Clare on Tuesday, 10th August, where she met with members of Clare Leader Forum at Áras Contae an Chláir in Ennis.
The Minister of State received a warm welcome from the Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council Cllr PJ Ryan, the Mayor of Ennis Municipal District Cllr Ann Norton and Deputy Chief Executive Noeleen Fitzgerald, and was accompanied by a number of local political representatives.
The meeting with Clare Leader Forum included discussion of a range of disability issues such as independent living, transport, and education and employment opportunities for people with disabilities.
During her visit to Clare, the Minister of State also visited Glensheen Court Residential Designated Centre, Dulick Centre, Irish Wheelchair Association Shop and Resource Centre, and an Enable Ireland residence.
Addressing the meeting with Clare Leader Forum at Áras Contae an Chláir, Minister Rabbitte said: “It is my privilege to meet with members of Clare County Council and the Clare Leader Forum, as well as my local Oireachtas colleagues Deputy Cathal Crowe and Senator Timmy Dooley, to discuss some of the issues facing disabled people across Clare and indeed the country. It’s a priority of mine to ensure disabled people are at the centre of decision making that impacts their lives so it is great to see such advocacy in action and the proactive approach the Council takes to supporting people with disabilities in Clare.”
Cllr PJ Ryan, Cathaoirleach of Clare County Council, said: “From my perspective and that of my colleagues on Clare County Council, I know how important it is that all sections of our society are catered for and listened to when it comes to policy making and implementation.
“It is, therefore, vital that the voices of all the people in our communities are heard and are central to our plans. I share Minister Rabbitte’s commitment to breaking down barriers faced by people with disabilities.”
Cllr Ann Norton, Mayor of Ennis Municipal District, said: “We must all work together to ensure we continue to remove barriers to accessing services so that all sections of our community are included and represented. It is important that people with disabilities have opportunities to be able to either work for themselves or to gain employment.”
Noeleen Fitzgerald, Deputy Chief Executive, Clare County Council, said: “Clare County Council recognises the importance of social inclusion and accessibility. The Council is a key service provider in Clare, and is mindful of the need to engage with its service users in everything it does, so that all service users can access Council services.”
